I can hardly believe it is October! I love the month of October with the changes of the leaves and landscape, but I have to say that this year has been a little disappointing. Hurricane Helene swept through the Carolinas and left a wake of destruction in her path.
I can say that we were lucky. We lost power for less than 24 hours, but there are some who are on Day 9 without power. There are some who are without homes to be powered. Entire landscapes have changed due to flooding and wind.
It was several days before the little town I live was opened up for me to travel to the post office. I live in the rural part of the town on the outskirts, but the little town itself had damage and power outage. The other small town that I live near and would often pass through had streets that were lined with giant old oak trees that are now history. It’s sad to see these iconic picturesque trees gone.
People talked about preparation, but how can you prepare for something as unpredictable as this? You cannot predict that old trees that have stood the test of time are going to be suddenly pulled out by the roots, can you? You can’t predict that the “T” tops of power poles are going to be sheared off by the wind randomly. You can’t predict that a hurricane is going to still be a hurricane when it reaches 3 states inland. We were expecting a Tropical storm. We got a hurricane.
Driving around my area of South Carolina, it looked like a bomb had been detonated in certain neighborhoods. It was heart crushing, yet, none of that compared to North Carolina.
I had planned to travel in October. I even purchased a nice DSLR camera to replace my old one, and I was excited to see places on my bucket list that I hadn’t been to since I was a child. Several of those have been completely wiped out. Towns were washed away. Roads were washed away. If I have to travel north of North Carolina, I will need to find an alternate route. And I had planned to visit north of NC. I wanted to go to Virginia!
It’s crazy how things can change.
Of course, I’m still able to run my studio. We managed to repair our roof this weekend. Some supplies have been slow to arrive, but they are still arriving.
On another note, I will be- FINALLY- uploading new Christmas products to my Etsy shop this week. My goal is to take pictures and edit them today and tomorrow.
Plus, I have two market fairs that I will be doing in the coming months. One will be in Pendleton in November, and the other will be in December in Pickens. Or maybe I have that reversed? I will have more information on that next week.
