While this is a solo business, I do have “help” in my studio. In fact, this helper will eventually advance her way up the ranks to learning how to operate several pieces of equipment. I told her that she would start off small and eventually learn how to do more.
Roselin is my granddaughter. She will be 5 in few weeks. Most of the time, she likes to press the button to start the embroidery machine because she has known since she was 2 that if it was green, you could press it. She also likes the fact that you don’t have to press a foot pedal for it to go.
Her current responsibilities in my studio is to check my tags and stamp some if the box is empty (if you get a tag that looks half stamped, its because she did it). She also helps put things back in their place and cleans up around the studio. For doing that, I take her out to lunch or dinner, and she gets paid an allowance. Everything else goes into an account for when she is older.
I’m a firm believer that if a child wants to learn how to do something (sewing, crocheting, knitting, painting, etc.) then they should learn. I even taught her dad and her uncle how to do things. Her first adventure into a sewing project is going to be a quilt. She just doesn’t know it yet. She did, however, find the scraps from her dresses I’ve made her and asked about them. They are going to be for her quilt she’ll make. I’ve taught her how to sew a straight line and not be afraid of the machine. Next is to start on a project. I can’t wait!
